The Indian corporate debt market has grown significantly over the years. As of 2022, the outstanding stock of corporate bonds in India stood at ₹40.20 lakh crore, which is a four-fold increase from ₹10.51 lakh crore in 2012.¹
In terms of annual issuances, the corporate bond market has also seen a steady rise. In 2022, the annual issuance of corporate bonds was close to ₹6.0 lakh crore, up from ₹3.80 lakh crore in 2012.
It's worth noting that while the Indian corporate debt market has grown, it still lags behind other major Asian emerging markets in terms of size relative to GDP. However, the market is becoming increasingly diverse, with new types of issuers, such as REITs and InvITs, entering the market.
